9/11

Today is my daughter’s birthday. She is 10, or as I told her first thing this morning…half of 20…whew, that is scary! We have talked with her in the past few years about the events that occurred on her birthday in 2001. Often she is asked if she knows what happened when people find out that it is her birthday and she tells them…still it is a special day to her and not one of mourning and sorrow, feelings and memories conjured up by the sounding of the numbers themselves. . . Nine. . . eleven. . . the images of this fateful New York day still come to mind.

I was watching the event unfold on a 6 inch black and white television that was an antique that sat around the office. It was the view to the outside world that day as the employees hovered around my cubicle. The towers were waning, smoke was billowing. The towers seemed to dance back and forth, but in reality it was just the poor reception of the rabbit ear antenna’s of this old TV. We watched in shocked amazement…a major turning point in the history and future of America playing out in front of our eyes. And yet, today my mind is on my daughter. She is growing up in the same world such momentous and tragic times are possible in. I am thankful to know that God’s protection is ever present. My little girl is 10.

“The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble. And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.” (Psalms 9:9-10)
