Mercy for orca unfounded?
The tragic killing last week of SeaWorld trainer, Dawn Brancheau, by a six-ton orca named Tilikum stirred up controversy and debate over whether whales should be in captivity. Those in various groups on both sides of the issue argue whether the creature, with a history of aggressive behavior toward humans, should be allowed to perform, be returned to the wild, or be kept alive. Should Tilikum die? Who‘s perspective is right? Can we know for sure?
Blasphemers and Naysayers
The world continues its toboggan slide into depravity, and frankly, into the Great Tribulation. This is a stark reality, but one that we must realize and understand fully. We are living in the end times and the signs of this are becoming more evident and poignant with each passing day.
The benefits of God
There is a powerful statement in the book of Psalms that really struck me today. Maybe because of so many that I see in the news who are suffering in anguish in this world. It seems that a day doesn’t go by where there is not a headline in the local paper that tells the disturbing details of the off-scouring of this society that we have to live in, but not be a part of. Rapes, murders, kidnappings, scandals, and a constant array of varied acts of random violence bombard the senses and assault the mind. This seemingly never-ending list of woes is contrasted with vivid clarity when we read this powerful Psalm:
“Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvation! Selah” – Psalm 68:19
Prayer or Pain?
An article dated today concerning Pope John Paul II stated that the pontiff used to flagellate himself with a belt to share in the suffering of Christ. He says he did this to get closer to Jesus. It seems from the article that even Mother Teresa self-flagellated and that it is a commonly accepted and approved practice of the Catholic Church. What does the Bible have to say in this regard?
Calm and quiet spirit
Something that is lacking in the chaotic world in which we live is a calm, quiet approach to life. From the veritable flood of emotion of those recently “venting their feelings” in the town hall meetings regarding Healthcare Reform to the loudly abnoxious pop culture that seems to be pressing their agenda of loud and proud (as well as “we’re here and we’re queer”…but that is a matter for another day).
